Description
A war of words between the Syrian and Egyptian media has been raging over the two countries' policies on Middle East peace. On Oct. 30, Egypt's state-controlled newspapers AL AHRAM lashed out at Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, urging him to change his country's behavior in the region and dismantle his alliance with Iran. It also alluded to his failure to free the Golan Heights from Israeli occupation. A prompt Syrian reaction came on Nov. 2 from the editor-in-chief of Syria's independent AL-WATAN newspaper, which has long supported official government policy. Waddah Abded Rabbo wrote a scathing column accusing Cairo of no longer having a leading role in the region, and only serving Israeli and U.S. interests. "What more could bother the leaders of Egypt than to realize the reality of their role in the region or to be faced with the certainty that Cairo has no Arab role and that they are not needed in good times or bad," wrote Abed Rabbo. She added that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak rushed to blame Syria for being behind the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. She went on to write that Egypt was once a leader of pan-Arabism, but now "simply serves the interests of Israel and the United States."
